What the number after MGO tells you
The number is a concentration, not a dose. MGO 100+ indicates at least 100 mg/kg of methylglyoxal, while MGO 1000+ indicates at least 1000 mg/kg. The plus sign means the measured result meets or exceeds the stated threshold.
Because the unit is milligrams per kilogram, the rating stays the same whether the product is sold in a 250g or 500g jar. Jar size changes how much honey you receive, not its labelled strength.
Why MGO appears on Manuka honey labels
Methylglyoxal is associated with the characteristic non-peroxide activity studied in Leptospermum honeys. A clearly stated MGO rating gives shoppers a consistent number for comparing products within a range.
