Manuka and Kanuka sound similar, and the plants can look similar at a glance, but they are not interchangeable names. The distinction matters when you are reading a honey label, comparing botanical origin or trying to understand what a seller means by “Manuka honey”.

In New Zealand, mānuka commonly refers to Leptospermum scoparium, while kānuka refers to species in the genus Kunzea. In Australia, Manuka honey is produced from Australian Leptospermum species. That means “Manuka” and “Kanuka” describe different botanical sources even though both sit within the wider myrtle family.

Manuka vs Kanuka honey at a glance

The difference between Manuka and Kanuka starts with botany. Manuka is associated with Leptospermum, while Kanuka is associated with Kunzea. So, is Kanuka honey the same as Manuka? No. When comparing Kanuka vs Manuka, use the declared floral source and supporting product information rather than the similarity of the names. Kanuka honey taste can be part of a sensory comparison, but flavour does not change the botanical identity or make the two honey types interchangeable.

Is Kanuka the same as Manuka?

No. They are botanically distinct. This is why researchers use plant, pollen and chemical identification methods when they need to distinguish floral origin rather than relying on a similar common name.

The distinction is also why a Kanuka honey should not simply be relabelled as Manuka honey, and why a genuine Kanuka product is not “fake Manuka”. It is its own honey type.

Why are the names confusing?

Part of the confusion comes from the plants' historical common names and their visual similarities. Mānuka and kānuka can grow in overlapping environments, and both have small flowers that attract bees. In a real landscape, bees may also encounter multiple flowering species.

For consumers, the practical lesson is simple: read the declared floral source and the evidence that supports it. Our guide to checking Manuka honey authenticity explains why traceability, batch information and credible laboratory information are more useful than marketing language alone.

Does Kanuka use the same MGO grading system?

Do not assume that a grading term from one honey can simply be applied to another. MGO refers to methylglyoxal concentration and is widely used on Manuka honey labels. If you are comparing Manuka products, read What Does MGO Mean in Manuka Honey? and UMF vs MGO for the terminology.

A seller should not use Manuka grading language to make an unrelated floral source appear equivalent.

Is one better than the other?

“Better” depends on what you are choosing for. If your priority is flavour, compare the actual jar. If your priority is a particular Manuka grade, choose a genuine Manuka product with the relevant label and supporting information. Avoid treating either honey as a medical treatment simply because of its floral source.

Australian and New Zealand Manuka are another separate question

The Manuka/Kanuka distinction is different from the question of Australian versus New Zealand Manuka. Both countries have Leptospermum species associated with Manuka honey, while regulations, industry schemes and product terminology can differ. Read Australian Manuka Honey vs New Zealand Manuka Honey for that comparison.

Australian Honey Company sells Australian Manuka honey; we do not use the existence of Kanuka honey to blur those botanical labels. You can view the Australian Manuka honey collection if you are looking for our current range.
