Small jars of honey can make practical wedding favours because they are edible, easy to personalise visually and suitable for many styles of event. The planning, however, is more than choosing a ribbon colour. Jar size, food labelling, transport, heat and guest numbers all matter.

This guide is for planning. It does not state that Australian Honey Company currently offers a custom wedding-favour service; confirm current capability before requesting or advertising one.

Honey wedding favours: planning at a glance

Honey wedding favours can range from simple mini honey jars to more formal personalised wedding jars or honey bonbonniere. Whatever the style, the planning questions are the same: jar size, quantity, labels, transport, heat and venue requirements. Treat wedding honey jars as a food product first and a decorative item second. Any promise of personalised labels, bulk packing or fulfilment should only be made after the actual service has been confirmed.

Choose the jar size by how guests will use it

A tiny jar can work as a symbolic favour, while a larger jar feels more like a take-home gift. Before choosing a size, consider:

  • whether each guest or each household receives one jar
  • how the favour will fit on the table
  • postage weight for destination weddings
  • whether the jar is intended for one or several servings
  • your budget per guest

For serving context, see How Long Does a 250 g Jar of Honey Last?. Wedding favour jars are often much smaller, but the same weight-versus-volume principles apply.

Plan the quantity with a buffer

Count confirmed guests, then decide whether favours are per person or per couple/household. Add a sensible buffer for late additions, damaged jars and keepsakes.

Do not order purely from the invitation list if final attendance is still changing.

Labels are not only decoration

If honey is supplied as a packaged food, decorative wedding labels should not hide or contradict required food information. Depending on the product and supply arrangement, mandatory information can include the food name, lot identification, supplier details, date marking where applicable, country-of-origin information and other requirements under Australian food labelling rules.

That is why the safest design is often a decorative outer element—such as a tag, lid sticker or secondary label—while keeping required product information readable.

Think about heat and transport

Honey itself is stable, but presentation can suffer if jars are left in direct summer sun, labels become wet or lids are not packed securely. For outdoor weddings:

  • keep favours shaded until table setup
  • transport jars upright in divided cartons
  • avoid leaving them in a hot vehicle
  • test adhesive labels on the actual jar before ordering hundreds

Are glass jars allowed at every venue?

No. Some venues restrict glass around pools, beaches or outdoor areas. Ask the venue before ordering packaging.

Can favours be posted to guests?

They can be, but postage costs, breakage risk and destination-country import rules need to be considered. International honey shipments can be subject to biosecurity or customs restrictions, so do not assume a jar can be mailed to every country.

Which honey should you choose?

Choose a genuine product with clear origin and labelling. Manuka can work for a premium gift, but the grade should be selected for the actual gift purpose and budget rather than assuming the highest MGO is automatically the best present.
